On the Valentines Day 2023, Struisbaai and L’Agulhas residents (and lucky travellers from around the world) were treated to a rare and heartwarming scene at the Struisbaai Harbour’s wooden fishing pier. A Cape Clawless Otter and Short-tail Stingray were sighted swimming together while searching for food and fish scraps in the shallow harbour waters.
The video (taken shortly before sunset) is one of the many stunning encounters visitors to Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas can witness in the abundant and rich waters where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

See an Otter and Stingray Swimming Together
Filmed by amateur wildlife photographer, Helen Finwick, the footage captures the incredible interaction between a Cape Clawless Otter (also known as an African Clawless Otter) and Short-Tail Stingray (one of Struisbaai Harbour’s resident stingrays).
The two unlikely companions were seen swimming together in search of fish scraps and bait left behind by local fisherman or thrown into the water by excited onlookers standing along the struisbaai harbour pier.
